Relieving Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Through Shiatsu and Self-Help Techniques

As a pain expert and Shiatsu therapist with over 25 years of experience, I've witnessed the debilitating effects of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) on many individuals (Including health practitioners & therapists).

This condition, characterized by numbness, tingling, and pain in the hand and arm, results from pressure on the median nerve within the wrist's carpal tunnel. Fortunately, there are effective ways to manage and alleviate these symptoms using Shiatsu, acupressure, and other complementary therapies. In this article, we will explore five self-help tools, five beneficial acupressure points, and the role of cupping therapy in relieving CTS symptoms.

Five Self-Help Tools for Managing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

  1. Ergonomic or postural Adjustments: Adjusting your workstation can significantly reduce strain on your wrists. You can use an ergonomic keyboard, mouse, and desk setup to maintain a neutral wrist position. Proper posture and frequent breaks to stretch your hands and wrists can prevent exacerbation of symptoms. If the head is tilted forward and the shoulders are rolled towards your chest, that will shorten muscles and connective tissues which will eventually compress your nerves.

2. Wrist Splints vs compression: If you are already in chronic pain mode, Wearing a wrist splint, especially at night, helps keep your wrist in a neutral position, reducing pressure on the median nerve. Splints can also be worn during the day for added support, particularly during activities that strain the wrist. In my experience, transitioning to compression sleeves that help the body increase circulation is better in the long term.

3. Hand Exercises: Regular hand and wrist exercises can strengthen the muscles and improve flexibility. Simple exercises like wrist extensions, finger stretches, and gentle rotations can help maintain mobility and reduce stiffness.

4. Heat Therapy: Applying a warm compress (grade ginger) or using a paraffin bath can relax the muscles and tendons in the hand and wrist, enhancing blood circulation and alleviating pain. Heat therapy can be particularly soothing after repetitive tasks. Another method is the Moxa (mugwort) heat pack.

5. Anti-inflammatory Diet: An anti-inflammatory diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and whole foods can help reduce overall inflammation in the body, potentially easing the symptoms of CTS. Include fatty fish, leafy greens, nuts, and seeds in your daily meals.

6. Cryoderm ointment - In my experience, this is one of the best natural ointments I have used clinically to help with persistent pain. It has MSM, Arnica, Boswellia, Illex, Eucalyptus and peppermint oils.

Five Acupressure Points to Alleviate CTS Symptoms

  1. Pericardium 6 (Neiguan): Located three finger widths below the wrist on the inner forearm, between the two tendons, this point relieves wrist pain and calms the mind. Apply gentle pressure with your thumb for several minutes on each wrist. I always work the whole channel.

2. Heart 7 (Shenmen): Found at the crease of the wrist on the pinky side, Heart 7 helps reduce wrist pain and anxiety. Press gently on this point for 1-2 minutes.

3. Large Intestine 4 (Hegu): This point is located on the webbing between the thumb and index finger. It is effective for relieving pain and improving circulation. Apply firm pressure for 1-2 minutes.

  1. Triple warmer 5 (Waiguan): Situated on the back of the forearm, two finger widths above the wrist crease, between the two bones. This point can alleviate wrist pain and improve energy flow. Use gentle pressure for 1-2 minutes.

5. Lung 7 (Lieque): Found on the thumb side of the wrist, just above the wrist crease, Lung 7 is beneficial for relieving wrist pain and promoting respiratory health. Apply moderate pressure for a few minutes.

Cupping Therapy for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Cupping therapy, an ancient technique used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, involves placing cups on the skin to create suction. This method can help alleviate CTS symptoms by:

  • Improving Blood Flow: The suction from the cups increases blood circulation to the affected area, promoting healing and reducing inflammation.
  • Relieving Muscle Tension: Cupping can release tight muscles and fascia around the wrist and forearm, reducing pressure on the median nerve.
  • Enhancing Lymphatic Drainage: This therapy can aid in the removal of toxins and excess fluids, decreasing swelling and discomfort.

Cupping therapy should be performed by a trained professional to ensure safety and effectiveness. However, those familiar with the technique can also use specially designed silicone, or hand pump cups for self-application at home.

Conclusion

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can significantly impact daily life, but integrating self-help tools, Shiatsu, and cupping therapy into your routine can offer relief and improve functionality. By adopting these holistic approaches, you can manage CTS symptoms effectively, promoting overall well-being and enhancing your quality of life.
